It would have been my Great Uncle’s 131st birthday yesterday. Here he is with my Grandpa Basil. David would grow up to become a successful caricaturist and political cartoonist.

His work has been high in my mind this year with our election looming, the ongoing pandemic and the war in Ukraine. What would they both have thought of the world today?

Gorgeous day for a spontaneous wander around the Melbourne International Garden & Flower Show.

I’m so confused 😂!!! I originally wanted to plant just natives in my empty garden beds and make a lush oasis for the birds, but maybe I need a corner for hydrangeas and fuchsias too, a nod to my grandparents. And maybe a ferny dell with a tree fern too….or maybe a Wollemi pine on the deck 😂

Why hello sweet boy! A friendly face on my morning walk enjoying a feast of Hawthorn berries.

Sadly these beautiful Gang Gang Cockatoos have just hit the endangered species list. A victim of climate crisis, hastened by the catastrophic bushfires of the past few years destroying their habitat.

This doesn’t even look real. Like bonsai or model vegetation. It’s the top of the ‘third sister’. As a child I used to look up there and imagine it being completely untouched by humans and somewhat prehistoric (although I am sure climbers have been up there now). The light was crazy. Sunshine, rain and mist all at once. It reminds me of the colours in the painting by Reinis Zusters that hangs in the Conservation Hut at Wentworth Falls (sadly closed at the moment).

Happy a birthday Harbour Bridge! Opened 90 years ago today. These images are from some tiny old negatives my folks discovered amongst the family photos. That’s my Grandpa (Basil Carlisle Low) with the pipe and hat on the bridge early in its construction. Notice the ferry below even has a horse and cart on it! Not sure who he was with or how he was given such a tour. This is when you wish you could pick up the phone and chat to your ancestors.

I have so many childhood memories of the bridge, from watching the fireworks with all the neighbours from our street on the Blue Mountains escarpment for the very first time (could have been in 1988?) to walking across it on the roadway in 1982 for the 50th celebrations. As a kid I used to love looking up at the arch from underneath when we drove across, and stopping to pay the person in the toll box. So massive. It still never fails to take my breath away. Going under it on the ferry to Luna Park is still a favourite thing to do when we visit the harbour.

Missing ‘home’. This fantastic little souvenir has “7 three dimension full color pictures” complete with a model or two that remind me of old photos of my Nanna and Pa from the 40s. My faves are the lady picking wildflowers with Mount Solitary in the background and the ladies picnicking on a cliff edge overlooking Narrow Neck.

I’ve always wanted to make my own viewmaster reels. It’s on the list.
