I’ve been looking for one of these for forever,

I’ve been looking for one of these for forever, so finding this for a couple of dollars gave me a little much needed lockdown rush. I was relieved when I finally had it in my hands. I couldn’t believe my luck, an original c1913 Whitney Bros Electric Post Card Studio postcard from Luna Park St Kilda.

Luna Park opened in 1912 (Sydney’s Luna Park didn’t open until 1935). I love the photo/model of Luna Park down below with the sign ‘Whitney Bros Photo’ out front.

The ‘while you wait’ photo studio was located in ‘The Palais de Folies’. There were several sets to choose from. I also have the Wild West Salon and The Motorcar, but now to find the Motorboat, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ scene and the famous Paper Moon (I have cards of the similar moon located in their Bourke St studio)

Look!!! Tawny nesting season is here! Apologies for the Tawny spam to come over the next few months. This is an exciting find in my lockdown 5km radius! Protective partner keeping guard in the tree nearby to this ridiculous nest balancing on a loose branch 😳. What were they thinking?!

I suspect the two usually out my kitchen window are nesting too because we only have one sporadically visiting. I shall have to hassle all the neighbours until I find the nest! I hope they have a successful season and we get to meet their little floofs! Last years was kicked out of the tree pretty fast and didn’t hang around.

Wattle Day is my favourite day of the year! A day

Wattle Day is my favourite day of the year! A day that symbolises diversity, resilience and renewal. And it’s the first day of Spring!

I have this curious book from 1921 called ‘Golden Wattle: Our National Floral Emblem’ published by the founder of the Wattle Club, field naturalist Archibald James Campbell. It is described on the title page as: ‘Being a particularly unique Series of Photo-Pictures of Wattles, or Australian Acacias, in full flower (with the introduction of a figure for idealistic purposes), and some scenes of Wattle Wilds, together with descriptive letterpress.’

Don’t ‘Wattle Wilds’ sound magical? The book is quite something and very much of the era. More clues as to the use of the mostly feminine figures can be found on page 18: “…as our theme “Yellow-haired September” with her plaits of gold, is suggestive of the feminine gender, it is to be supposed that many of our pictorial illustrations, whether allegorical, idealistic, or purely botanical, will be accentuated by the introduction of the female form — beau ideal.”

So exciting! On Thursday, three hours before lockd

So exciting! On Thursday, three hours before lockdown 6 kicked in, and after several cancelled attempts, I finally got to go inside the Flinders Street Station Ballroom. It’s somewhere I have dreamt of visiting ever since I learned of its existence. First opened in 1910, it’s been closed to the public for many years. Every wall, every room, every corner layered in history and rich patina. An amazing space (and the longest corridor I have ever seen!)

Patricia Piccinini has a captivating new exhibition on there at the moment, ‘A Miracle Constantly Repeated’. It’s on until January. Such a treat to see both the ballroom and a thought provoking exhibition together. I really enjoyed the juxtaposition of the art and the space. Very clever. I will be going back as soon as I can as it was a lot to take in!

One of my favourite things to do is give new life

One of my favourite things to do is give new life to old images. Work in progress, playing with a marvellous photo by Alfred Ellis found in an incomplete 1893 photography magazine. Very faded, reproduced with a chunky crude halftone screen, yellowed and foxed - however no denying it’s a beauty that needs to be shared!

I am going to do some more research on Alfred Ellis because he took some incredible theatrical images and he was a big influence in securing photographers copyrights by founding the Copyright Union and even taking some cases to court.

I feel a little bad but also totally legit at the same time using this image given it is over 125 years old! Wonder what Arthur would think?
